WASHINGTON – Some congressional Democrats are boycotting Tuesday’s State of the Union address over impeachment while those attending are trying to put the focus on health care.

Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., one of the most high-profile members of the House caucus, tweeted that she could not use her presence to “normalize Trump’s lawless conduct & subversion of the Constitution.”

“None of this is normal, and I will not legitimize it,” she tweeted.

By late afternoon, several other Democrats had likewise said they would not attend the speech that comes on the eve of the Senate’s expected vote to acquit Trump after the House impeached him in December.

Some of the Democrats vying to take on Trump this fall were concentrating on winning votes in New Hampshire. That includes Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders who planned on delivering his response to the address from a museum in Manchester.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) walks through Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol ahead of the State of the Union on February 4, 2020.

Democrats attending Trump’s address left no doubt about the top theme they’ll be pushing.

“1) Health care 2) Health care 3) Health care,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

Democrats are bringing more than 80 patients, doctors and health care advocates from across the country to sit in the spectator gallery during Trump’s speech.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called it a “a high likelihood” that Trump will gloat about how Republicans want better, cheaper health care for everybody.
