If you thought last week’s episode of ABC’s “The Bachelor” was drama overkill, you might want to pour yourself a glass of Champagne. Like, yesterday.
This week’s episode starts off in Cleveland, with contestants still reeling about Alayah’s return. “She made her bed and she has to Alayah in it,” Natasha quips.
Bachelor Peter assures Alayah that he doesn’t care what anyone says about her, and says he felt a strong connection with her from night one. But it doesn’t take long for him to decide to send her home again, saying he doesn’t want to put her through any more of “this,” which we understand to be all the drama. It was time to say goodbye – for our sake and hers – though we don’t understand why she came back to get sent home that fast.
Our bachelor lets the women know he sent her home, and that he’s aware this could come off as “wishy-washy,” but that he knows what he wants and that he trusts them. Sure.
Next, the episode’s first of two rose ceremonies kicks off. Victoria F. and Kelsey already have roses and are joined by Madison, Sydney, Natasha, Lexi, Hannah Ann, Shiann, Mykenna, Victoria P., Kelley and Tammy. That means Deandra, Kiarra and Savannah are going home, and will miss out on the gang’s visit to Costa Rica.
The truth about Peter’s accident, Kelsey’s insecurity
We finally learn what happened with Peter and the golf cart in Costa Rica (host Chris Harrison confirmed the “freak accident” in an Instagram post last October). He greets the women there with a bandage on his forehead and explains he needed 22 stitches after running into said golf cart, then hitting his head with a shattered glass he was holding. Ouch! (We’re glad he’s OK, though the footage should make you chuckle.)
Sydney joins Peter for the episode’s first one-on-one, and he tells her she’s the best kisser. They go on a helicopter ride and enjoy a picnic in the jungle (there’s a cute moment where she head-bumps him despite his injury). She opens up to him about having only seen her dad five times in her life, her family’s financial troubles and feeling isolated and discriminated against in high school. They used to call her “Oreo girl” (her father is black and Dominican and her mother is white) and vandalize her home, and she didn’t go to her senior prom or homecoming. Peter, amazed by her strength, gives her the rose. They strip down and make out in bathing suits, which becomes a trend in the episode.
Back at the house, Kelsey is feeling insecure about Peter dating other people. (That is the format of this show, for the record.) Tammy checks in on her and later calls her a hot mess – foreshadowing much of the drama ahead.
That insecurity rears its head on the group date with Shiann, Kelsey, Victoria F., Madison, Natasha, Victoria P., Lexi, Hannah Ann, Tammy and Mykenna. Jessica Pels, the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, and photographer Tyler Joe join Peter and the group in the jungle to take photos for the magazine. The “winner,” judged by how they perform in the shoot, will be on a cover with Peter.
You’d think the trophy would go model Hannah Ann (and later the real one does, when she gets the group-date rose), but Victoria F. snags the coveted cover slot. After the date, Kelsey tells Peter that she’s falling in love, and he says he’s thought about her so much – but so have the other women.
Tammy tells Peter that Kelsey had a mental breakdown after he went on the date with Sydney and that she’s seen her drink excessively. Peter confronts her about it and she explains she was emotional but that it wasn’t a breakdown. Kelsey later tells the group she’s not ashamed of crying in front of people, but not everyone is on board.
“I don’t need to drink myself to death and cry about it for a whole day,” Tammy says.
“I did that once,” Kelsey fires back. You really can’t make this up.

Kelley and Peter go on one-on-one date, Kelsey drama escalates
Kelley has the second one-on-one date of the episode. The pair get in touch with their spiritual side and visit a shaman to test their compatibility. Kelley is distracted by a lizard, which should give you an indication of how this goes. Peter feels like their relationship has hit a lull and that he’s giving more than she is. Kelley assures him that she wants to be with someone who challenges her every day and vice versa (though we’re not totally buying her commitment). It’s enough for her to get the rose, and yes, a partially-clothed makeout session.
Later, Kelsey pays a visit to Peter to clear the air. She refutes Tammy’s accusation that she has a drinking problem, which also sparked a rumor that she’s popping pills. Peter loves that she came over so much he gives her a rose ahead of the ceremony.
“I don’t need a rose ceremony tonight to know how I feel about you,” he tells her. Uhh, Peter, this isn’t going to make Kelsey any new friends.
And in an even bigger twist: He decides to forego that night’s cocktail party. Tammy asks Kelsey if she brought her up to Peter, which she confirms. Then other women gang up on Tammy, and Sydney and Tammy start screaming at each other. Tammy reminds us she’s not here to make friends (we understand).
Tammy pulls Peter away before the ceremony starts and says that she’s here to focus on a relationship with him. Mykenna also steals him away for a chat. (We’d also like to point out that lip-licking thing she does is annoying, and she should stop.) This extra time with Peter doesn’t go unnoticed.
Time for the roses: Remember that Kelsey, Kelley, Hannah Ann and Sydney already have them. Victoria F., Madison, Natasha, Victoria P., Mykenna and Tammy get them, too, meaning Lexi and Shiann won’t continue on the show. Shiann warns him that sometimes what he’s seeing from some of the women isn’t who they really are (dun dun dun).
We won’t have to wait long for more turbulence: “The Bachelor” returns Wednesday (8 EST/PST) for a bonus episode.
