Official hung up on while live on CNN

Iowa caucus results: Manual recount delays outcome

An Iowa caucus official who had been waiting on hold to report his precinct’s results was abruptly hung up on while doing a live interview Monday night.

Shawn Sebastian, the caucus secretary for a precinct in Story County, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he had been on hold with the Iowa Democratic Party for about 90 minutes.

Sebastian tried to report his precinct’s results with the operator while live on CNN once he got off hold but was disconnected from the call after a few “hellos.”

“Hi, hello? They hung up on me. They hung up on me,” he said on air. “Okay, I’ve got to get back in line on hold. They just hung up.”

According to a tweet from the precinct caucus leader, Sebastian was finally reconnected a little after 11 p.m. CST after trying to report his results for about two hours. He said it took about 20 minutes to report.

“I don’t think this is a way to do democracy,” he said in the thread. “I was just following the rules and this is the outcome the rules got us.”

Sebastian told Blitzer during the CNN interview that he was forced to call the state Democratic Party after the smartphone app created to report precinct results stopped working.

Some precinct chairs reported Monday afternoon that they were unable to log into the app to report results.
