Kobe Bryant remembered by Coach K as 'leader' of Olympic titles

Kobe Bryant never played college basketball, but the late Los Angeles Lakers star — who died at 41 in a helicopter crash Sunday — developed a close relationship with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski through USA Basketball.

Following a statement Sunday and teleconference Monday, Krzyzewski spoke with the media about Bryant’s death following the Blue Devils’ win over Pittsburgh

“The last couple days have been really emotional. Look, Kobe was one of my players. I coached him on three teams, he was my leader. We had special moments, private and public,” Krzyzewski said.

Krzyzewski went into Bryant’s interactions with his grandchildren behind the scenes, then lamented the loss some more.

“It’s been bad. It’s been bad, and I have been very emotional about it. And for the other people involved too, are you kidding me? Nine people? Horrific. So very tragic,” Krzyzewski said.
