Musician Grimes is opening up about her pregnancy.
The electronic music performer, who is dating entrepreneur Elon Musk, confirmed on Instagram Tuesday that she’s 25 weeks pregnant and struggling to “cope with working and having a baby.”
“This whole thing has been a bit of an ordeal,” Grimes, 31, captioned a selfie. “Had some complications early on, a decent second trimester but starting to hurt everywhere at 25 wksz. What were yalls experience w this stuff like?”
The Canadian singer, whose real name is Claire Boucher, said she didn’t fully “understand what I was getting into” or the physical toll pregnancy takes on your body.
“I feel like I was woefully ill prepared cuz I dunno if pregnancy is as visible or discussed as it should be,” Grimes wrote. “It’s been good too, but it makes working a lot harder. Good at writing and having lots of wild ideas tho, but anything physical is hard. Im also way more emo and less capable of bravery in the face of haters online and stuff haha.”
The musician’s famous friends offered her some words of encouragement in her comment section to assure the mom-to-be that everything will be OK.
“I’m sure making a human is the hardest job ever so be kind to yourself, you’re doing double duty,” Katy Perry wrote, prompting Grimes to respond, “Thanks KP.”
Grimes first sparked pregnancy rumors on Instagram in January by posting a nude photo of herself with a fetus Photoshopped over her visible baby bump.
She didn’t caption the picture, leaving fans to speculate whether the photo was a pregnancy announcement or just the latest example of her artistic expression.
When responding to a fan who applauded her for exposing her bare chest in the NSFW photo, Grimes explained that although it may have violate Instagram’s Community Guidelines, “being knocked up is a very feral & war-like state of being.”
“I thought about censoring them for a hot minute haha (this may get taken down anyway) but the photo is so much less feral without the nipples,” Grimes commented.
Grimes said she shared the picture with her one million Instagram followers to fully embrace the skin she’s in.
“Most of my friends told me not to post them so then I was afflicted w reverse psychology,” she added. “Interrogated my shame on it and decided it was sum weird internalized self hatred to feel uncomfortable abt my body.”
Grimes’ initial post was removed by Instagram. She then shared a similar picture that had her long orange braids covering her nipples.
“Censored for insta haha – almost got away w it,” she captioned the second post.
Days later, Grimes shared another artistic shot on Instagram of herself cradling her baby bump, which is covered in scarification. Again, the musician didn’t add any context to the photo, but her comments were filled with congratulatory messages from fans.
Although she didn’t make any mention of the father, Grimes has been romantically linked to Musk, the South Africa-born billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, since May 2018. They went public with their relationship that May, when they walked the Met Gala red carpet together.
In December, the pair was spotted at the Kardashian/Jenner’s Christmas Eve party, posing in an Instagram photo with Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Quavo and Saweetie.
Grimes and Musk connected after they made the same artificial intelligence joke, reports Page Six. As the story goes, Musk, a longtime A.I. warner, thought of a pun that’s way over our heads and combines A.I. thought experiment Roko’s Basilisk with the baroque European style rococo, to make “Rococo basilisk.”
But Musk realized Grimes had made the same highbrow joke years before he thought of it. So, according to the report, he reached out to her and they got together.
This will be Grimes’ first child. Musk has five sons – a set of twins and a set of triplets – from his previous marriage.
Musk, 48, has not shared any announcements on his social media accounts. USA TODAY reached out to both Musk and Grimes’ reps for comment.
