Dr. Amie Harwick, a Hollywood-based therapist who was previously engaged to comedian Drew Carey, was found critically injured at her home Saturday and later died, according to police. She was 38.
Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Gareth Pursehouse, was arrested and charged with her murder after she was found unresponsive below a balcony with injuries “consistent with a fall,” the Los Angeles Police Department announced in a news release Sunday.
Officers responded Saturday at 1:16 a.m. to a call of a “woman screaming” at a Hollywood Hills home, where Harwick’s roommate told officers Harwick was being assaulted, police added.
Police also said a restraining order Harwick had filed against Pursehouse recently expired.
She and Carey, 61, got engaged in 2018 and called it quits less than a year later. USA TODAY has reached out to a representative for Carey for comment.
Harwick, who received psychology degrees from California Polytechnic University and Pepperdine University, specialized in marriage, family and sex therapy, according to her website. She appeared in the 2015 documentary “Addicted to Sexting” and authored the book “The New Sex Bible for Women” in 2014.
