Google uploads new satellite images on Earth View

Google has cornered the market on making high-resolution, aerial imagery of earth’s most breathtaking landscapes available to the public.

The global tech giant increased its Google Earth View collection by over 1,000 new images on Tuesday, raising its collection to over 2,500 images, said product manager Gopal Shah in a blog post.

“Earth View started simply enough—a curiosity pursued by the curious. Over the decade, that tiny seed sprouted several limbs, and today this imagery has been seen by millions of people the world over,” Shah said.

Saavy tech users who enjoy using beautiful landscapes as their phone and computer screen backgrounds and screensavers will appreciate the update. The images are “optimized for today’s high-resolution screens—featuring brighter colors, sharper images and resolutions up to 4K,” explained Shah.

Shots taken from satellites of Yellowstone National Park, the Red Sea in Sudan, and the San Francisco Bay salt ponds are just some of the samplings available in the Earth View app on Google Chrome for Android or via a Chrome extension you can install on your browser, according to CNN.

There is also an interactive exhibit on Google Earth’s Voyager.

Shah said he came up with the concept for Earth View ten years ago while looking down at the salt ponds from an airplane.
