New Hampshire primary results: Andrew Yang drops out

Polls have closed in the New Hampshire primary. Check back for updates throughout the night.

Bernie Sanders won New Hampshire’s Democratic primary Tuesday, edging Pete Buttigieg in the Democrats’ presidential nominating contest after last week’s muddled results in the Iowa caucuses, according to projections by media outlets.

Less than 1 percent of the pledged delegates to the national convention were at stake, an even smaller number than in Iowa. But the first two states typically winnow the race and define the frontrunners after voters in the small states have spent months kicking the tires on all the campaigns.

“Thank you, New Hampshire,” Sanders said. “Let me take this opportunity to thank the people of New Hampshire for a great victory tonight.”

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar was on pace to finish a strong third.

And since 1972, no Democratic candidate finishing lower than second in the New Hampshire primary has gone on to win the nomination. In the last six contested Democratic primaries, New Hampshire voted for the party’s eventual nominee half the time.

Next up are the Feb. 22 caucuses in Nevada, a state with a more racially diverse population than the first two and one where labor unions play an outsized role. South Carolina’s primary is Feb. 29.
