2020 candidates to juggle trial and Iowa caucuses

The four members of the Senate running for president may need to watch Iowa caucus results from Washington, D.C., and not Iowa, on Monday as the impeachment trial overlaps with the first nominating contest in the 2020 election.

Members of the Senate are required to remain in the Capitol for the duration of the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, and closing arguments begin Monday, the same day as the caucuses.

That poses an issue for Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Michael Bennet, all candidates with a lot riding on the contest.

Bennet said the timing wasn’t perfect, but explained he would be in Washington to fulfill his duty.

“I think we have to be where we have to be,” the Colorado Democrat said, “and where we have to be on Monday is here.”
